In an effort to build a presence with each chapter that is somewhere between a best friend and the holy ghost, The College Democrats of Massachusetts is announcing its new team of Regional Directors. Operating in the East, West, Central, and South Shore regions, the Regional Directors will work to unite the various local chapters and tighten their coordination and communication.
Ross Svenson, Harvard ’15 | @RossSvenson
Eastern Regional Director
As Eastern Regional Director we have Ross Svenson, a Harvard student hailing from the DC suburbs. Ross has long held a passion for politics, and since igniting his love for grassroots organizing in 2008 while working for Obama, he’s canvassed everywhere from the rural roads of New Hampshire to the busy streets of the South End. When he’s not rowing for Harvard’s Lightweight Crew Team he serves as the Campaigns Director for the Harvard chapter of College Dems. Ross is a natural fit for the role of Eastern Regional Director, as last summer he interned at the White House Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs. He knows how to unite and activate the membership, and will be a great asset to our team.
Willis Chen, UMass Amherst ’15 Western Regional Director
For the Western Region we have Willis Chen, who’s currently entering his senior year at UMass Amherst. Studying as a part of the Commonwealth Honors Program, Willis is majoring in History, Political Science, and Economics while pursuing certificates in Public Policy and International Relations. While that seems like it would take up most of his time, Willis has also remained very politically active in his home state, California. He has interned for Jay Chen, who ran for California’s 39th Congressional District in 2012, and interned in Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s California office. He even found time to work as a Public Policy Intern for the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. On campus, Willis is currently the Communications Director for the UMass Amherst chapter of College Dems, serves as a Senator in his school’s Student Government Association, and is a part of the planning committee for the Five College Relay for Life. I’m convinced that he must be cloning himself, but there’ll be more on that to come later in a special investigative blog post.
Anthony Elias, Stonehill College ’15 |@anthony__elias
South Shore Regional Director
The South Shore Regional Director will be Anthony Elias, a senior at Stonehill College who is nearing the finish line on his dual major in Political Science and International Affairs and minor in Public Policy and Administration. Anthony has been very involved with his local chapter of College Dems, and he remembers their trip down to DC to witness the inauguration of President Obama as one of the coolest experiences of his life. He has studied Public Policy in Eastern Europe and interned on Capitol Hill, so the South Shore should be a cakewalk. Anthony’s a big fan of exploring cities, lengthy discussions about existentialism, hiking, and all things politics, so naturally he drinks an outrageous amount of coffee. Which might not be too good in the long term, but hey, we’re young. All that energy will do great things for the South Shore.
Emma Cronin, Holy Cross College ’15 | @emkatcro
Central Regional Director
As our Central Director, Emma Cronin is a Senior at the College of the Holy Cross with more than enough experience working in politics both here and in DC. She’s worked on both Ed Markey’s and Elizabeth Warren’s senatorial campaigns and studied abroad in Spain. Recently, Emma’s worked in the White House, which must have been a dream come true, as she found her love of politics while working for the President’s reelection campaign in 2012. In her spare time she enjoys travelling, going to Red Sox games, and watching House of Cards and The West Wing (meaning she’s very familiar with the best and the worst of politics).
Thanks for checking out the College Democrats of Massachusetts’ new Regional Director appointees! We look forward to working with them to bring together College Democrats across the Commonwealth.
